Here I Grow Again!

18 Aug

I love the beauty industry! And it’s a good thing, as I have spent most of my adult life entrenched. The years I have spent working in salons, spas, & med spas have shaped how I see & experience the world around me. I know that I KNOW true beauty comes from within, & that helping people with their image & developing meaningful relationships is where the real reward is in what I do.

In Washington State, I am a licensed Cosmetologist, Esthetician, and Esthetics Instructor. Over the last 16 years my focus has been on skincare & makeup. I love the luxurious experience of spa treatments & the results derived from treatments found in med spas. My ideal treatments blend both worlds.

Over 10 years ago, I was introduced to Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics and fell in love! I have used & sold JI in every med spa in which I have been employed. From 2008-2011, I was a freelance makeup artist on Iredale’s Artistry Team in WA State.

In 2012, I caught the Nerium bug & have been all a-twitter about it ever since. My clients & I have been experiencing fantastic results with this breakthrough skincare line.
I have joined forces with my dear friend & partner in Nerium, Jennifer Solsten, to form The Real Beauty Team. We are using our backgrounds in the beauty & skincare industries, combined with life experience, to build up & encourage women of all ages.

Victoria’s Academy offered me a teaching position in their esthetician program, with the position starting September 2013. So exciting!
I love writing blog entries & articles about people, places, products, & treatments I discover in the skincare & beauty industries.
What my colleagues and friends are up to is of great interest to me as well. Please share!

NeriumAD, What’s The Deal?

18 Aug

Do a Google search on NeriumAD, a natural, botanical, anti-oxidant skincare line, and all kinds of things come up, some good, some bad, some downright cuckoo!

I am licensed in cosmetology, esthetics, and as an esthetics instructor. Most of my skincare experience has been working in doctor’s offices/med spas, and I’ve also worked in upscale spas, as well as independently. I was HIGHLY skeptical of Nerium, mostly because it is sold through network marketing, and I just was not familiar with that business model.

In starting to use Nerium, I had some breakout and irritation initially. Turns out I, little miss esthetician, was using it incorrectly! Once I began using as directed 10 months ago, I have not looked back. I loved the product so much and saw such nice results on myself and my friends, that I decided to sell it. Most of my skincare clients are loving it. Many of us are able to have facial treatments less often now because the Nerium is doing wonderfully on our skin. (As an example, in these first 10 months of Nerium use, I have given up Botox, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and IPL, so that in my first year of Nerium I and my customers would know that my results were from Nerium, not from anything else I was using or receiving). I also gave up my other powerful physician strength products.

Nerium is an anti-aging product and is marketed to work on fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, AND it is firming! In my experience in skincare, there is no one product that fits 100% of the people, but Nerium works for more people than most products do.

I’ve seen complaints about the cost – too high, too low. Compared to med spa and even department store products, Nerium is on par cost-wise, often times less expensive. Additionally, and this is huge for me, this is the only skincare product I’ve ever been able to earn for free, and the only skincare product I’ve ever been able to help my clients get for free.

Not sure what people mean by Nerium being a scam. Like any other product, you pay for it, you receive it. When I place orders for other skincare products in the spa, I have to pay for them. Same with Nerium, only with Nerium, I paid for my initial 5 bottles, now I just pay shipping on the free inventory I’m earning. I don’t have to carry a stockpile of product, as most of my business can be conducted through online ordering.

Networking marketing is not for the faint of heart, it takes a committed effort over time. But working hard in order to achieve that residual income is kind of a no brainer in my book.

There is no harm in giving Nerium a try. Most brand partners (reps) will let you sample the product. But even if you purchase at retail or the reduced autoship price without trying Nerium first, you receive a 30 day money back guarantee. Autoship is easy to adjust the dates on or to cancel altogether with no penalty. No risk is involved.

Interested in ordering product?

Does the business opportunity appeal to you?

I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

What Do Skincare Professionals Think about NeriumAD?

What Do Skincare Professionals Think about NeriumAD?

Skincare professionals and beauty industry experts (like me!) are endorsing NeriumAD, a breakthrough nighttime skincare treatment cream. I’m so happy my friend, Jennifer Solsten, introduced me to it last fall. This is a product I feel good about sharing with my skincare clients and friends.

Summertime Thang… Wedding Makeup & Skin

1 Jul

Do you have weddings to attend this summer? Or maybe YOU are getting married?!! Let’s talk about makeup and skincare then.

Makeup and skincare go together as a topic, or at least, they should. The skin is the canvas, and the healthier and smoother, the better you and your makeup will look.

What you do to prep your skin will depend on how much time you have, what you’re willing to do, and how much money you can factor in.

I’ve been doing skincare for a long time, and I can tell you, don’t decide at the last minute before your big event to get your first facial or peel ever. In case of an adverse response or the skin needing to purge, you want to give at least two weeks before your event if you will be trying new skin treatments or products. If you are at two weeks or less, don’t risk it, but do get the best quality makeup you can, and hire a reputable makeup artist, if at all possible. If not, girl, get on YouTube for some tutorials!

If you’ve got more time to work with, try treatments like the ultrasonic facial that won’t make you red, flaky, or sensitive. You still need to enjoy your summer, right?!!

The skincare product I’ve chosen to endorse is NeriumAD. Why? It’s the hardest working product I’ve found and it improves a multitude of complexion concerns, such as fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, brown spots, dull skin, and sagging. It’s a natural product that gives real results without over-processing your skin. I call it a facial in a bottle!

Real Results With NeriumAD

Real Results With NeriumAD

Being in skincare, and predominately advanced skincare in the med spa arena, I do have a preference for the highest quality products and ingredients. My makeup line of choice is Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, or Jane Iredale. First developed to be safe and compatible within a dermatology setting, Iredale is a full range, beautiful makeup line that looks fresh, pretty, and lasts all night. Blotting instead of wiping will leave your makeup on and only remove perspiration and oil production. Other than that, the only thing you should really ever need to touch up is your lips.

So your skin is looking good and you’ve picked out your venue, colors, decor, and your dress (assuming you’re the bride), and you’ve picked out your attire if you’re not the bride, now you can decide on a makeup look that will be a marriage (wah wah wah) of your own natural, personal style and the theme for the event. Keep in mind that most grooms prefer a little more of a natural look. But you and your makeup artist or your bffs are the only ones that need to know what exactly went into achieving that natural look!

Similar rules apply to wedding makeup as the rest of the time:

Bold eyes and lots of lashes paired with a nude lipstick/gloss.

Hey! There’s more than one way to get big lashes! Use Latisse or other lash growth serums, start a couple months ahead of time and grow your own! Getting lash extensions is another option. Or, use false lash strips or clusters. Experiment with lash extensions and false lashes at least a few weeks ahead of time to make sure you don’t have any allergies or sensitivities.

Even when choosing a nude lip look, I still recommend using a good lip liner and lip stain, topped off with lipstick or gloss.

bold eye nude lip

Smoky eyes paired with a pink lip.

Experiment with the smoky eye. It’s a gorgeous look and is actually easy to do. Start with the deepest shade around the lash line, use slightly lighter but still deep color out to the crease line, and lighter, more skin toned up to the brow. Blend! Add highlite at brow bone and inner corners of eyes, and do your brows! You can’t have them fading into the background!

Help keep your pretty lips in place with lip stain first, then lipstick.

Fuller yet groomed eyebrows and retro eyeliner paired with bold lip color.

Brow stencils or a steady hand and an artful eye will go a long way here. Keep eyeshadow pretty classic, main shade not much deeper than your skin tone, deeper shade for crease and bottom lash line, and highlite shade. Practice a tight line along your upper lash line, keeping at the area where lashes grow out of your lid. Wing the liner out some at the outer edge.

Precise lip liner, a lip stain, and lipstick/gloss will help you keep your bold lip throughout your event.

retro liner bold lip

Dewy skin and nude eyes paired with glossed up lips.

Good skincare is really paying off here! Add to that a dewy or luminous finish foundation or BB Cream. A cream blush will continue your glowing theme.

Line lips and use a lip stain/gloss combo. Keep a classic eye look with lighter/nude shades.

Above all, may your summertime weddings and special events be blessed and successful! Mazel Tov!!!

5 Tips For Keeping Your Skin Lovely This Summer

1) Be Sun Savvy And Bump Up Your SPF In The Summer

We all should be using SPF all year round during daylight hours. Did you know that? Even when it’s cloudy, even when you are indoors (unless you have all the drapes closed and the lights off, haha!), and even if your skin is dark. While it is true that we need Vitamin D, and some health experts are recommending 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on skin free of SPF instead of eating or supplementing your Vitamin D, please note that dermatologists and skin cancer experts recommend an SPF of 50 every single day.
Because most signs of aging come from UV exposure, and because UV exposure ups your odds of developing skin cancer, AND because even those who are pretty good about applying SPF do not always get complete coverage or reapply as often as they should, I highly recommend sun protection on a daily basis. Make SPF part of your morning routine, and have a product on hand so that you can reapply your sun protection throughout the day, especially if you are out swimming, skiing, or even walking your dog. The general rule is to reapply your sun protection every hour, and more often if you are swimming or perspiring, and toweling off.
There are so many great formulations of SPF out now, so there really are no more excuses! I typically enjoy iS Clinical products, though I have not yet tried their new Eclipse SPF 50 (3 oz $39.50). You can bet I am going to grab myself a tube in time for summer! Eclipse SPF 50 comes in translucent and two tinted shades, is water resistant, and offers broad spectrum UV protection. I always keep Jane Iredale’s Powder Me SPF 30 (2 oz $44) on hand for touching up SPF without messing up makeup, and because it will not spoil in my car’s console on a hot day. Powder Me SPF also comes in translucent and two tinted shades. PCA Skin is another great skincare line that offers a variety of SPF products, one to fit your every need.

2) Keep Hydrated… From The Inside Out

Yes, you hear this all the time, but it is especially important in the summer. As things heat up, and as you may become more physically active this time of year, you will lose hydration quickly via perspiration. Keeping hydrated is both a beauty issue in that when you are well-hydrated, your cells and organs, and all your systems, function better, and when things are functioning better, you look better! We need at least 8-10 glasses of water a day, and perhaps more in the summer, and when we are working out. Remember to drink sodas, coffee drinks, and cocktails in moderation, as those beverages do not count as water intake and tend to be dehydrating. Boo! But true.

If you are spending time in intense heat or working out more, you need more hydration, and sometimes more than just water. This could be a whole separate blog! So please do a little research on keeping hydrated. One article I liked was written for runners but can apply to anyone who works out – check out Summer Hydration.
Regardless of your skin type, you will want to use a moisturizer to bind water to your skin – think of a plant that is wilting and how it perks up when you water it. That is what a good moisturizer can do for your skin. There are moisturizers for virtually every skin type. Some I like are Nucelle’s Mandelic Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 17 (2 oz $30), Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint (2 oz $44), and PCA Skin’s ReBalance (1.7 oz $34).

3) Always Cleanse Your Skin At Night
One of my little esthetician pet peeves is when people don’t cleanse their skin at night! I know you are tired, but you are doing yourself and your skin such a disservice if you don’t take care of it at night. Even if you don’t wear makeup, a gentle cleansing at night will remove oil, perspiration, SPF, air pollution, and any debris from the day behind you. I also recommend a double cleanse at night. The first cleanse should be quick to remove the bulk of the debris, and the second cleanse you can spend a little more time on. The light exfoliation and massage you do at night when you are cleansing and treating your skin will also help keep pores clean, remove dead skin cells, and stimulate circulation and cellular turnover.
Depending on the skincare products you use and the regimen you follow, you may or may not need to cleanse in the morning. Some regimens call for simply rinsing the skin well with lukewarm water in the morning.
There are cleansers geared toward every type of skin and every type of situation. For example, iS Clinical makes a cream cleanser (6 oz $48) that can be used with or without water, simplifying cleansing for soldiers, campers, and those who are on bed rest. There are also tools that facilitate cleansing, like Jane Iredale’s Magic Mitt ($15), a microfiber mitt that works with water to cleanse your skin and remove makeup. The Magic Mitt can be used with or without cleanser. The Clarisonic cleansing brushes (approximately $100 to$225) are fantastic, too. Combine the Clarisonic with your favorite cleanser and you will be cleansing approximately six times more thoroughly than when cleansing with your hands.
Use lukewarm water when cleansing and rinsing your skin. Hot and cold temperatures can be drying, overstimulating and/or irritating.

4) Treat Your Skin At Night
At night when you sleep is when your whole body jumps into rejuvenation mode. Getting plenty of sleep is key, that’s why they call it beauty sleep ;)
We have already established that it is important to cleanse your skin at night, and everyone has heard of beauty sleep, but did you know that using product to “treat” your skin with at night will be one more step on the path to healthy, beautiful skin? While your body is already in repair mode, you can help your skin by using a treatment product that works while you are sleeping.
I make no secret of the fact that I love NeriumAD (1 oz $110), a nighttime skincare treatment product that is changing how people think about their skincare regimens. What I really love about it is that I can treat my skin with Nerium to combat the signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and sagging, without making my skin sun sensitive. I’ll be honest, I wait all year for summer and do not want to have to miss out on one bit of it because of whatever I’m using to treat my skin!
Other products I like for nighttime that will not make you sun sensitive are SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum (1 oz $260) and Nucelle’s Mandelic Anti-Oxidant Moisturizer (2 oz $30).

5) Summertime Skincare Treatments
If you are someone who spends a lot of time outdoors in the summer, or you do workouts that heat you up, like hot yoga, bicycling, jogging, kickboxing, or whatever, it’s really a good idea to take this into consideration when planning your skincare treatments. Certain treatments do not mesh well with sun exposure or increased body temperature and perspiring. Rethink peels and laser types of treatments during the summer months.
Are you like me and not willing to miss out on the summer sunshine? For my customers and for myself, I’m not willing to take safety risks when it comes to the skin. So what’s a skincare fanatic to do?!! And what’s a skincare fanatic to recommend?!! Save the heavier duty treatments for winter. Instead, opt for European Facials, Ultrasonic Facials, and even a light Dermaplaning session. This way, you can still take great care of your skin without compromising it and without cramping your summer style!
This particular blog entry was written at the request of my dear friend, Rebecca Dashow. Skincare and the Teenage Beauty

1 Apr

Taking care of your skin might not be on the top of your list if you’ve never had skin problems. But did you know that your skin is your largest organ? It protects you, holds you together, gives you a sense of touch, helps regulate your body temperature, and helps your body to filter impurities. Our skin is amazing and resilient, but it also needs to be cared for.

How our skin looks and feels affects our lives and our self-esteem! When our skin does not look or feel well, it is a sign of something being off track internally, or injury occurring externally. When there is something of concern, like severe acne, hives, or a rash, it is necessary to see a dermatologist or family physician for help in determining the cause and finding relief.

For daily life, taking care of your skin can be pretty simple!

Daily skincare is a must.

Daily skincare is a must.

While certain foods are said not to cause acne or other complexion issues, consuming unhealthy food and beverages is likely to negatively impact your health, which in turn is likely to negatively impact the health and appearance of your skin. Too much of a good thing can also be bad. For example, too much milk and dairy can lead to acne-related issues. Try getting creative with your diet and rotating the foods you are consuming so that you don’t eat the same thing every single day. This can help rule out allergies and sensitivities, which can affect the skin. A healthy, balanced diet paired with drinking plenty of water and green tea, and regular exercise will go a long way in keeping you healthy from the inside out.

Eat what's good for you!

Eat what’s good for you!

Get into the habit of taking care of your skin daily and nightly!

Gently cleanse your skin. Look for cleansers that do not have harsh and unnatural ingredients. Depending on the skincare product line you use, you may or may not need to cleanse your skin in the morning, but you will always need to cleanse your skin at night. Your skin repairs itself while you sleep at night and needs your help to get off to a great start! It is necessary to remove makeup, SPF, dirt, and oil from the long day behind you. Use lukewarm water, not hot. Hot may feel better, but it can lead to dehydrated skin, overproduction of oil, redness, and can aggravate acne, as can aggressive scrubbing and harsh products.

Cleanse gently and always use lukewarm water.

Cleanse gently and always use lukewarm water.

magic mitt

Cleansing can be as simple as a microfiber mitt and water!

Every skin needs a treatment product, moisturizer, and sun protection.

Treatment products used will depend on skin type and on the product line you are using. In general, though, if you are dry/dehydrated, a simple hydrating serum is helpful. If you have redness or inflamed acne, a calming product that contains chamomile will be nice. Prone to oiliness and blackheads? Try a serum with light alpha hydroxy acids in it. Most skin types benefit from NeriumAD, a nighttime treatment product that contains Nerium Oleander and Aloe.

NeriumAD, it’s not just for moms!

We need moisturizer to help keep any serum we use bound to the skin, and to help prevent moisture loss. If you are oily, or in warmer weather (when many experience increased oil production), you may choose to use a lightweight moisturizer, or to use a combo moisturizing/sun protecting product. Check out tinted moisturizers that have SPF in them.

Tinted Moisturizer/SPF

Sun protection is necessary every single day, even in cloudy, dreary weather. Rays that damage and weaken your skin are even able to penetrate windows. You wouldn’t take out any of your other organs and bake them in the sun or put them in the tanning bed, would you?!! Your skin is an important organ, too! There are even foods you can eat to boost your skin’s protection from harmful rays. Eating blue and purple berries, red and orange fruits and vegetables, and even dark chocolate will help improve your skin’s ability to protect itself. So will drinking green tea.

Eating colorful berries is good for your skin!

Good quality dark chocolate is good for your heart, brain, and skin!

Good quality dark chocolate is good for your heart, brain, and skin!

Even when eating an optimal diet, we still need physical sun protection, and chemical-free sun protection products are an excellent choice. There are moisturizing SPFs, and even dry SPFs! When out in the sun for prolonged periods, you will need to reapply your sun protection product hourly, and after swimming or perspiring and toweling off. Hats and sunglasses are a must. Good thing they can also be fashion statements!

Wear a cute floppy hat :)

Dry SPF!

Dry SPF!

If you MUST have a tanned appearance, please do it safely and get a spray tan, apply a self-tanning lotion, and/or apply bronzing makeup.

Never pick at your skin. Picking at a blemish can cause scarring, inflammation, redness, and even infection. Apply ice for a few minutes several times a day to an inflamed blemish, and spot treat with a spot treatment cream or Tea Tree Oil. A licensed esthetician can safely remove blackheads, and a dermatologist can help you with cystic acne.

Care for your skin daily, treat it gently, practice healthful diet and exercise, drink plenty of water, and protect your skin from the sun. Being mindful of your health and your skin will set you up for a healthier, more beautiful complexion for life.

Tantasia Time Again!

27 Feb

Let’s talk about Jane Iredale’s beautiful self-tanner, Tantasia. This self-tanner actually smells pleasant and citrusy and isn’t streaky. Tantasia imparts a slightly bronzed look immediately upon application and allows the wearer to build and maintain as much of a natural-looking tan as desired.

Go ahead and apply your regular lotion to your elbows and feel so they don’t soak up extra tint. Apply Tantasia as you would your moisturizer or body cream, and massage in well. It is recommended to wash your hands afterward so your palms don’t get a tan (that’d be weird). While it is still good to exfoliate your skin regularly, you don’t have to worry about scrubbing down before each Tantasia application.

The product doesn’t seem to collect in crease lines, like those on the backs of ankles, and fading is gradual, not that odd flaking-off look that some self-tanners get. Tantasia works with your individual chemistry to produce a natural-looking tan.

Get as Tantasia-happy as you like, but remember that you will still need sun protection!
